хочу сказать, что я против слова contest в этом контексте, т.к. contest подразумевает некое соревнование — как и русское "конкурс", но у нас в таком контексте оно устоялось, хотя никакого соревнования нет, — это просто задание, направленное на выявление творческих способностей

: "Contest" has the connotation that only one person wins, and the others lose (or get 2nd, 3rd places), and there are no individual "pass" or "fail" grades.

For example, on my college entrance exams (SATs) there were 3 main parts: the math component, reading comprehension component, and the writing component. Each part of the test was graded separately, and there was also an overall score that was an average of all of the 3 components.
В контексте вступительных экзаменов в Америке, слово "component" имеет подобную мысль, если это относится к части экзаменов. Но кроме этого случая, лучше переводить слово "конкурс" как "competition."
