German term

knappschaftliche Krankenversicherung

German to English Bus/Financial Insurance
I'm translating a text about the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See. It is talking about the different types of insurance and services offered by the organisation and the administrative effort involved. It includes the text:

"Typisch für die Akten der Rentenversicherung sind umfangreiche Dokumente, langjährige Verläufe und lange Archivierungszeiten. Bei der knappschaftlichen Krankenversicherung müssen vorwiegend Dokumente unterschiedlichster Art wie Anträge, Bewilligungen oder Schriftverkehr gehandhabt werden."

Is this just referring to the general health insurance offered by the Deutsche Rentenversicherung or is it a specific type of insurance? The only hits I get are for miners' insurance, but the text is a lot more general than this and has just given a figure of 5 million insured individuals in Germany.

Hazmat The embassy's translation, "Miners' Federal Railway Seafarers' Pension" makes no sense. "Miners', railway workers' and seafarers' pension" does.

With Jutta. Traditionally a "Knappschaft" is a mineworker's trade union, what would be a "Zunft" to other professions. But when such groupings form insurance schemes, they most often will cover workers in other fields as well.

Knappschaft According to the Duden, a Knappschaft is a gild or association of miners - nothing else. So this may refer to a specific insurance for that profession

Mineworker's Insurance Institution

Hi Adam,
I had a similar text and translated "Bundesknappschaft" as Federal Mineworker's Insurance Institution. The German embassy in Ottawa has a great website explaining the German pension insurance system. The Knappschaft Bahn-See is translated as Miners' Federal Railway Seafarers' Pension. Hope this helps.
