Lithuanian term

krantinė

Lithuanian to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Kaip adrese versti žodį "krantinė" (Neries krantinė, Kaunas)?
Gatvė verčiama ir trumpinama St., prospektas - Ave., o krantinė?

Paul Adie (X) Jun 20, 2011:
Artūrai, I fully agree. From what I have read above, this is just an address, no flow required. I see you're in Vilnius, I'm looking forward to coming over in the summer!
Arturas Bakanauskas Jun 20, 2011:
I agree if an actual address is being given. But if it is a real estate description, for example, then I do translate the street/square/avenue etc. because then it is literary and the reader wants to flow through the text, not stumble over foreign words.
Paul Adie (X) Jun 20, 2011:
Why translate an address? I don't translate addresses, they are what they are. Whenever I translate addresses from Russian, I only transliterate. Imagine the poor Lithuanian postman looking at the letter and it says 'quay' or 'embankment'; I don't think 'krantinė' would automatically pop into mind. If you want to reply, you can do so in Lithuanian or English.

krantinė

Pagal naujausius reikalvimus nacionaliniame adrese verčiamas tik mieiestas ir valstybė, pvz. S.Nėries krant. 10, Kaunas, Lithuania

embankment (road)

Interesting question. The object in question is visible at http://www.panoramio.com/photo/42780550. This is clearly a road on an embankment, not a riverside quay. You can find both embankment and levee roads and streets on the internet. There is one hit each for neries embankment and neries quay, five for neries quay, but like with menus, it is a question if the translators knew what object was meant.
