German term
in der Klasse
German to English
Social Sciences
Education / Pedagogy
I'm proofreading the translation of some instructions for teachers to accompany a lesson. The German original uses two phrases to describe situations where all the pupils carry out an exercise together (rather than individually, in pairs or small groups),
im Klassenverband
in der Klasse
The translator often uses "in the class" to translate this, but this doesn't seem very clear to me:
In the class the students study a composite picture of ...
XXY can be discussed in the class.
The exercises can either be carried out in the class or added to the pupil's individual schedule.
What do you think? Are these clear enough? Or do I need to change it to something clearer, like "in the group", "as a class"?
To make it clear, I would use this phrase to distinguish between "in the class" and "at home as homework". But that is not what is meant here - all the work is carried out in the classroom, even the other tasks that are not "in der Klasse" in German.
Thanks for your advice

as a class or as a group
To distinguish from "at home as homework" I'd say "in the classroom"

I was just adding the bit about at home as an additional comment.

Note from asker:
I'm not looking for a phrase to distinguish from "at home". I'm looking for a phrase to distinguish from "individually" or "in pairs". |
I forgot to write Thank you in the first comment, since your suggestion "as a class" confirms what I need. |

whole-class
Another option, to distiguish between, e.g. whole-class and group teaching/activities
Group work v. whole-class activities
Group and pair work (henceforth group work) are so much a part of our everyday teaching routine that we hardly pause to think before partitioning the class to tackle some particular communicative task. But group work may not always be the best option. There will be a time and a place for whole-class activities in the English language classroom, just as there's a time and a place for group and pair work.
•In praise of group work
•In praise of whole-class discussion
•Tact and sensitivity
•Repertoire
•Variety adds spice to the classroom

Thanks from one happy to have spent only one year at the chalkface (not that being an English-language assistant really counts - I have every respect for those at the real chalkface)

: that's not the point - the idea is that the class is doing it together, not in pairs or small groups in class time.

in class/the class
It's a simple matter of the preposition
"in class" is in the school. in the classroom - which can be used as an alternative when you get bored with in class (in der Klasse)
"the class" is the gruop (Klassenverband)
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 28 mins (2011-05-12 11:16:20 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
The class is given four exercises to choose from.......

You could vary, you know.....
In class the students work together on their upcoming presentation.
The exercises can be carried out in class or individually.
The class completed the project just in the nick of time.
Every student in the class joined in in the song.
....until death do us part.......

Note from asker:
Actually, the German author uses "in der Klasse" and "im Klassenverband" synonymously in this text. |

: Pair work and group work would also take place 'in class'. So not quite as simple as PG surmises.

But I still prefer 'whole-class' as suggested below
