Change log

May 9, 2011 15:11: philgoddard changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Buck, Josephine Isaacs (X), philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Suzan Hamer May 9, 2011:
"if any" I would write "We can determine [assess/ascertain] what the risks (if any) and benefits are. " Or "We can determine the risks (if any) and benefits.
Kate Hudson (X) May 9, 2011:
Agree with Writeaway - if there are any
writeaway May 9, 2011:
thanks! basically all it means is 'if there are any'.
ebell (asker) May 9, 2011:
We kunnen bepalen wat de risico’s zijn (als die er al zouden zijn) en wat de voordelen zijn
writeaway May 9, 2011:
With Kate Isolated snippets of this sort of text can be more confusing than helpful. Please provide the full NL sentence.
Kate Hudson (X) May 9, 2011:
Can we have the whole sentence.... it makes for a better impression of the required translation?

the physician told the patient the nature and purpose of the procedure or procedures, together with the known risks, if any, of death, brain damage, quadriplegia, paraplegia, the loss of function of an organ or limb, and of disfiguring scars associated wi

if they be there/if they exist/if they already existed

But this is such a sentence which is mainly defined by context; First possibility is rather formal, second is more certain than third. Cotext and whole sentence please.

An 'at all' would make that phrase even stronger.

should they exist

You could add 'already' (should they already exist) but to me it seems repetitive.
Example sentence:

We can [then?] determine the risks (should they exist) and the benefits.
