French term

tub à scrap

French to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime loading/unloading vessels
It is obviously exaggerating a bit to call this a French term but it is used in Quebec French and I don't know enough about the domain to know whether the same words are used in English. This term is used in Quebec to describe the large containers used at shipping docks that are hoisted and moved around and used to toss scrap into. I can't find much evidence of "tubs à scrap" or "scrap tubs" on Google. Can anyone suggest what to call this in English? See the link for a photo (GIF, 131K, I uploaded this picture myself to my private webspace and so it is safe). Any suggestions much appreciated!

scrap tub

The fact that you describe them as "containers used to toss scrap into", and that they've chosen to use two English words, makes this a fairly obvious choice. And it gets plenty of Google hits as a container for scrap.

agree Yvonne Gallagher : prefer "container" possibly "scrap metal container" so size is clear

neutral kashew : Maybe over the pond, but in GB English a tub is round(ish) - not like the one asker put up.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I went with "scrap tub" in the end to minimize questions from the client although if I was writing this text rather than translating it, I think I would have used "scrap container." Thank you to everyone for your help."

scrap container

That's what they called them where I used to work. A lot of the photos look like the one on the asker's link.

neutral kashew : skip open - container closed?

A skip is always open. A container can be both.
neutral B D Finch : I agree that a container can be open or closed. However, it is either too general or, if specific (and especially at the docks) the wrong sort of thing: http://www.en-derin.com/artworks/crazy-cargo-30-steel-shippi...

Not wanting to be a bore, but have a look at this (one of many examples): http://rpn.baumpub.com/products/7290/e-scrap-container. Certainly not a freight container. However, if you still think it's too general, a "scrap hopper" may also do the trick.

bucket

I would call it a "bucket" despite the caption on this photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/21537240@N08/2506281146/in/phot... calling it a "shovel".

Bucket
b.3.b A scoop operated by power, used for hoisting coal, grain, etc., and in dredging and excavating.
OED

I wouldn't call the object in your picture a "tub", despite "tub à scraps", because the word conveys an idea of "storage" whereas your object looks like it doesn't hold the scrap for very long, instead scooping it up and dumping into another container (skip, ship's hold). Although the usage could derive from the mining industry as:

Tub
a.5.a ‘Originally a mining bucket, now specially applied to the open-topped box of wood or iron, mounted on wheels, in which coal is brought from the face to the surface.

Canadians seem to call them "skip bins", rather than skips.
Peer comment(s):

agree Yvonne Gallagher : "skip" common and perfect this side of pond but for Canada?//yes, skip bin seems OK

Thanks gallagy. See my note above.
agree kashew : But why commit to exclusively metal? // Remember Steptoe & Son?

Thanks kashew. Because of the word "scrap". Of course, the rag-and-bone man took stuff other than rags and bones.// Indeed I do remember Steptoe & Son, but the horse proved that they were rag-and-bone men.
