B.S. cum laude with Honors

English to Italian Other Education / Pedagogy Diploma
At my US university cum laude referred to a student's final GPA (3.5 - 3.69: cum laude; 3.7 - 3.89: magna cum laude;
3.9-plus: summa cum laude). Unlike, the "with Honors" distinction, cum laude actually appears on my diploma.

I have seen a translation for B.A. with Honors as a Laurea cum laude with overwhelming agreement. With that in mind, how should my B.S. cum laude with Honors be translated?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Maria Fokin (asker) Apr 7, 2011:
The honors has nothing to do with my GPA (my grades). The "cum laude" was granted based on the grades.
To graduate with honors one had to do an Honors Thesis in one's major. So, I had to choose an advisor and work on a project with him, then write a thesis that was then submitted to the Honor's Program for approval.
This was not required for graduation. It was extra.

so honors is in your major not in the average of your results in the overall course?
Maria Fokin (asker) Apr 7, 2011:
"with honors" does not appear on the diploma itself there is a separate certificate that attests to the completion of the honors program in geological sciences.

not sure I understand the question. in the diploma do both "with honors" and "cum laude" appear in writing? or just cum laude with reference to your marks?

Laurea con lode e menzione d'onore

I would translate it: "Laurea con lode e menzione d'onore".

cum laude e menzione d'onore

in Italy you may say even "bacio accademico" if I'm not mistaken
Note from asker:
thank you

Laurea a pieni voti con menzione speciale per tesi in scienze geologiche

that's the best I can get since a similar wording in Italy does not exist as far as I know

because "laurea a pieni voti" is an excellent result (not the maximum achievement but something going very near the maximum such as 100/110)
and the wording "menzione speciale" is a special honor to a thesis (you usually get it with laurea con il massimo dei voti 110/110 but it can be ok in this case in my opinion)

thank you
