French term

pl

French to English Medical Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) immunology
The issue here is that the abbreviation could be in French or in English, as the author mixes the two throughout the file. However, for example, 'kb' is kilbase so this could be anything and the position of 'pl' could be before the number in English or after it, depending on what it refers to. My best guess is that it refers to a base pair position in the plasmid, but I am looking for any input at all.

"Pour augmenter la combinaison de transgènes vaccinants possible, la stratégie s’impose ; elle consiste à ne conserver du virus de départ que les éléments essentiels pour la réplication-encapsidation du virus, à savoir les 2ITR (inverted Terminal Repeat de 62pl) et la séquence psi d’encapsidation (env. 200pl) ; on obtient ainsi un « espace » pour des transgènes de 43kb."

Hey Joann..."almost" at the same time...:)
But I'm glad you're thinking about typo as well.
I brought a couple of paper to show that bp numer is compatible both with ITR and encap sequence.
Elizabeth Lyons (asker) Apr 7, 2011:
kilObase not 'kilbase' I am causing typos myself here. Yes it is pL not pI. Typo is most likely - just wanted to be sure because it was done twice.

bp What a coincidence... two biology-trained translators post the same answer at the same time!

It seems to be a typo; 62 for ITR is the number of base-pair.
Also, the encapsidation sequence is about 200 nucleotides long

En Français, ce serait pb (non pl) . "paires de bases"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Lionel, many thanks for the prompt and thorough response/explanation. Joanne, thank you for the confirmation. It was as I suspected, and you confirmed, a repeated typo."

My educated guess based on the information that you provided is that pL, refers to the number of bases (aka base pairs) in the said sequence.

So you have an ITR at each end that is 62 bp long and the encapsulation sequence (PSI cis-element) is about 200 bp long.

Oh, and I am assuming that you are asking about "pL" and not "pI"!
