French term

layonneur

French to English Science Environment & Ecology African forests

(Forestier, Mitzic, 1994). (Glossaire, Document du web).

I am not sure of the best translation of this term in English - a few ideas I had were forest/timber path clearers/people who clear paths in virgin forest/brushers, etc.

Many thanks in advance!

I think it may have to do with one making "layers", but won't be able to help further.

George Davila first began working in the Amazon jungle as a 13-year-old trail cutter for groups of visitors. He learned English by listening to tourists and practicing with them as he cut a path for their exploration. As he studied natural history, George was assigned to work with scientific tours. George also joined a Peruvian tour operator as a barman and waiter while completing coursework in guiding and science.
