Could this mean anything else? My image is of him making a scratchy noise sort of clearing his throat -- but I have no idea if the French could possibly mean that.
This is a description of action in a film. It is uncomfortable moment between a man and a woman who had a very very bad sexual encounter and are now going about a discussion of science seemingly ignoring what had happened the day before. The man asks if she has some wine. The woman then alludes to what had happened between them.
The woman tells the man she will not give him a glass of wine, saying
... saoul vous devenez un sauvage.
The man then (se gratte la gorge) and continues the science discussion as follows:
Voila, une horloge a pendule, exacte a Paris, prends un retard de plus..
