intervenire a questo Convegno

First of all, let me thank you for the invitation to attend this Conference.
I would like to thank you for inviting me to participate in this Conference.
First of all I would like to thank you for your kind invitation to participate in this Conference.

Un'altra possibilita' potrebbe essere: First of all, I would like to express my thanks for being invited to participate in this conference (and in particular) as a speaker

to speak at this convention

He has obviously been asked to speak as a "relatore" a speaker, otherwise he wouldn't be speaking, but just listening in the audience.

to participate in this Conference/Congress

("to speak" implies a prepared speech. This is neither stated nor implied. It is wrong for a translator to introduce material not in evidence. For example, the author may be an active participant (interveniente) by participating in an unrehearsed panel discussion or question session.)
"participate" definitely implies active participation. "attend" would imply passive participation.
Note from asker:
Thank you for the explanation concerning the 2 verbs (to participate and to attend). As to the material in my possession, I did not give more information here but actually I have been informed about the nature of the document and it is actually Mr. XXX's speech for a Conference. :-)
Thank you for your suggestion.

neutral James (Jim) Davis : If from a careful examination of the context, this person is a speaker, then it would be better to translate "speak", than participate. In the context of conventions, "intervenire" generally means speak.
