Discussion

B D Finch Mar 20, 2011:
@chris Scouring, in your examples, is a deliberate overstatement used for emphasis. So, yes, it is a bit harsh. There is another use of the verb "to scour" in animal husbandry, where a cow that is "scouring" has diarrhoea (a word I always have to think about spelling, so that may be why farmers call it scouring). There's an obvious connection there with Bourth's comment.
Bourth (X) Mar 19, 2011:
Scouring is also the action of a strong flow of water on a riverbed/bank, esp. at bridge abutments/piers, where it is likely to matter a lot, and also in a dam reservoir, where opening the bottom outlets can serve to scour out sediment. Can't see it for a pond, somehow.
chris collister Mar 19, 2011:
A bit harsh, or not? I scoured the region looking for a decent restaurant, after scouring the internet for the same. Both were left relatively unharmed. Physically, scouring removes a layer of material, which is what happens in dredging.
B D Finch Mar 19, 2011:
@chris Scouring is about harsh abrasive action by the glacier or wirewool pad on the object of the scouring. Scouring a pond? Just about possible, depending upon the type of pond, but unlikely.
Tony M Mar 18, 2011:
récurage In the context of a pond etc. it, always means removing the silt etc. from the bottom. But 'clearance' is used to cover this (.amongst other things sometimes as well)
chris collister Mar 18, 2011:
It depends which bit is being cleared: if it's the bottom, it might be "dredging". When you "scour" a saucepan, it's generally the bottom, and a glacier "scours" the landscape

agree Tony M : I guess perhaps it depends a bit on just how big these particular ponds are too?

agree msimoulin : It is better than cleaning or scrubbing and dredging is usually associated with water.

agree Gabrielle Leyden : you empty and scrape out the pond. In French, they use "dragage" for rivers and harbors, "(ré)curage" for pools, ponds, and pipes, at least in my experience.

pond cleaning

Would that do for what you need?

You might also consider 'pond clearance', which although not strictly speaking exactly the same thing, might well be more suitable for your needs.

Note that 'to scour' is only one of the meanings of the verb 'récurer', another that is often more applicable is 'to scrape'. This is certainly the term used when talking about cleaning silt out of a pond — it's exactly what the « Eaux et Forêts » said to me about my former mill-pond.

Doesn't mean the pond has to be big or that a dredge has to be used.

DREDGING BREDGAR POND
Algae bloom and an infestation of duck weed suggested something needed to be done so we caught the fish (for safe-keeping) and emptied the pond - sludge from the bottom was spread on a nearby field, a new island was built for the ducks and, so far, it all looks much healthier.

But the DEP is there, on the exact day local officials said it would be, ready to DREDGE POMPHREY’S POND.
Local officials, after years of delays, had planned for work to start “on or about September 15.”
Today, September 15, work is expected to get started at the pond to lower the water level and excavate the pond’s soil to restore it to a more pleasant state. Before, neighbors said it had developed a feculence that made it undesirable for people who’d normally spend time at the pond.
Within six to eight weeks, that will be a thing of the past, Mayor John Ekdahl said.
