tamper
I will go with "tamper". As I see that used more often in manuals.
**Being a bit picky here. So I'm sorry in advance Seika-san, I don't think your suggestion is wrong, it's just that this just may be a bit more applicable and used more often (then again someone may come up with something better as well).

This comes from the following standard warning for Japanese electronics: 電源コードを加工しない
It's not always translated directly in the English manual (see http://dl.epson.jp/support/manual/data/ink/pxw8000/4118314_0... and http://bssc.sel.sony.com/BroadcastandBusiness/docs/manuals/d... ).
However, Panasonic does the following:

POWER CORD
To avoid unit malfunction, and to protect against electrical shock, fire or personal injury:
Keep power cord away from heating appliances and walking traffic. Do not rest heavy objects on, or roll such objects over the power cord.
Do not tamper with the cord in any way.
An extension cord should have the same type plug (polarized or grounding) and must be securely connected.
Overloaded wall outlets or extension cords is a fire hazard.
Frayed cords, damaged plugs, and damaged or cracked wire insulation are hazardous and should be replaced by a qualified electrician.

tamper with / modify
Use either "tamper with" or "modify" as both would be acceptable in this context.
