French term

jeune habitat

Non-PRO French to English Marketing Furniture / Household Appliances
Salut à toutes et à tous,

"La prise de part de marché par les enseignes "jeune habitat" va-t-elle se poursuivre ?"

I'm a bit stuck with 'jeune habitat' here. I am 99% sure I understand the concept; in my eyes it refers to retailers such as IKEA who create inexpensive yet stylish furniture and aim it at (young) people on low budgets.

The question is, how would you express that idea in English? I've seen a few suggestions on various different sites - 'starter furniture', 'lifestyle furniture,' 'young home décor' to name but a few.

Several dozen brains are better than one with this type of question so any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Joe

Hi Helen, it is definitely not referring to the company
Helen Shiner Feb 1, 2011:
A thought If this is young Habitat (with a capital H), as in the company, does the term sought need also to make some sort of reference beyond starter furniture to the design element? I would have thought 'young Habitat' is an identifiable group of consumers. Not much money perhaps but big on design. Or have I understood this wrong?
Joseph Jeffries (X) (asker) Feb 1, 2011:
(I think, not 'I'm think' - oops!)

Jonathan, thanks for the suggestion. I'm think it would work better in a property context, though. I do get stressed out every time I go to IKEA but probably not as much as someone buying a house for the first time!

Hi Alison, thanks very much for the links - I am still relatively new to the site and still haven't quite cracked the search feature. When I searched nothing came up, so I'm definitely doing something wrong :)

agree Susanna MacKenzie : I would go with 'youthful living' - it expresses decoration, style, furniture etc.; all the notions found in "habitat".

Starting out / The young adult starting out

"Starting out" is a commonly used idiom both in the media and in colloquial speech so it is a very well known phrase.
Example sentence:

"Home Kitchenware For the Young Adult Starting Out"

"Starting out alone in a new home can be a big transition for young people,"

Many thanks for the suggestion, Lara
