it boils down to: ... in order to be able to sail 'with a skeleton crew consisting of one person'

what I did was: in order to be able to sail with a skeleton crew ([that is to say] single-handedly)

this phrase says I believe:

in order to be able to sail with a skeleton crew

and / that is

in order to be able to sail single-handedly

alleenvaart naar mijn mening is 'alleenvaart' bedoeld als nadere uitleg van wat hier met minimum bemanning wordt bedoeld (te meer daar haakjes heel vaak voor nadere uitleg worden gebruikt)

in de praktijk komt het neer op: ...om met één man/vrouw met dit schip te varen

als ik het goed begrijp waren Phil en Maleen ook deze mening toegedaan

de vertaling zou dan kunnen zijn (waarbij ik gebruik maak van de voorstellen hieronder:

...... (in order to be able to) sail with skeleton crew ([that is to say] single-handedly).

I may be wrong, but I think the Dutch may be badly written. The implication could be "with minimal crew, or even single-handed" - which is almost the same as saying "single-handed".

This seems to be a contradiction in terms - "met minimum bemanning" means "with a skeleton crew", but alleenvaart means "with one person". Some context would help.
