Portuguese term
descarte (in the context)
Portuguese to English
Tech/Engineering
Petroleum Eng/Sci
terminology -
I seem to have a blockage on this term within this context. The obvious "discard", or "put away", does not really seem to fit in here, unless,, in the first example, it is used like "avoid". ie, "....in order to determine a critical scenario so that contamination can be avoided"?? or "...in order that the chances of contamination can be discarded"???
But what about the following example?
Este módulo do STROLL tem por objetivo verificar a probabilidade de presença do constituinte na região estudada, bem como o tempo de chegada, a fim de determinar um cenário crítico para o descarte de contaminantes na região.
Another contexual use as follows:
A espessura resultante de todo o descarte é então obtida através da soma da
contribuição de cada elemento

seems to fit your second example a little better

effluent
descarte de contaminantes na região.
the discharge of effluents in the region
A espessura resultante de todo o descarte é então obtida
The resulting thickness of the effluent is then obtained

Effluent is an outflowing of water or gas from a natural body of water, or from a human-made structure.

"This chapter addresses the issues associated with the discharge of contaminants to land and fresh water. Five broad issues in relation to these discharges are identified as follows:
1.Contaminant discharges from land use activities cause adverse effects (stated); and community expectations that some level of discharges will be provided for, but also that the adverse effects of discharges will be avoided, remedied or mitigated.
2.Emergency or accidental discharges of contaminants (especially hazardous substances) have the potential to cause significant adverse effects on the environment."

Note from asker:
Thanks Mark, if I can use "discharge" as a valid translation for discarte, it certainly makes sense for the second example and I like Gilmars idea for the first example also, thks to both of you! |

: Works for both examples which Andrew posted....although "disposal" fits better in the 1st. example, it wouldn't work in the 2nd one.
