Happy to be able to help! Btw, I should probably mention that, whenever they could, 'Auntie Top-Knot' and 'Uncle Bill' wintered in Andalusia with their arty/literati friends... which is where she picked up the 'head comb' habit. "Her hair was Roman sunsets, Autumn leaves,/Today white ashes blow across her brow..."

hi ernestine. thank you for your suggestion. yes i agree i think head comb is the best translation. i remember my grandmother used to wear one as well. i've just seen hundreds of them in spain and i think they were called peinetas in spanish. the spaniards certainly know as they are still popular over there, definitely more than here among elderly women.

Hi musica... My (Neapolitan) Mum used them: she called them 'pettinini'. An (Anglo-Scottish) Aunt (whom we called "Auntie Top-Knot" because of the way she wore her long red hair) used them: she called them 'head combs'. I used them too, when I had long hair: I called them 'pettinini' or 'head combs' depending on which language I was using... (and I was probably wearing one in this sketch I use as my profile pic.)

thank you everybody for your help. sorry but i do not think it might be a barrette as a clasp is normally used to secure it in place. It opens when pressing the two metal pieces at either side together. pettinessa is a different thing. this story is about a lady from the past who would gather up her hair at the back in a bun held by this comb??? (pettinessa) typical of italian and spanish women. i think it is peineta in spanish.

agree Ambra Giuliani : In Spain it was used to hold the mantilla raised from the hair 'n coppa a gab' Pettine ornamentale sounds right. In the context plain 'pettine' would do.
