I am translating a text that is talking about the differences between property ownership, i.e. mortgages, leasehold and freehold properties etc in the UK and in Germany. The sentence is as follows: den einzelnen Personen stehen demgemaess als "Eigentumsform" nur Besitzrechte zu"

I don't think it's necessarily a contradiction in terms, Steffen - "Eigentumsform" is in quotation marks.

Contradiction in terms The German sentence contains a contradiction in terms: "Eigentum" and "Besitz" are fundamentally different from a legal point of view, which is why "Besitz" (possession) can never be a type/kind of "Eigentum" (ownership).

Whilst Eigentum means ownership in common parlance, it is being used here in a strictly legal sense so it refers to the kinds of "title" to property - some of these may not imply full ownership
