There are several terms I don't understand in this paragraph. This is the first one:

I believe it's a diminutive of "copa" ('canopy'), which is used to refer to trees. In a shrub it would be 'crown', which is a synonym for tree canopy as well. This is tricky, because the crown begins at the point where the roots end, and when you plant a shrub you are looking at the *bottom* of the crown - but the entire part exposed to air and light is the crown.
