Discussion

Joanne Nebbia (asker) Nov 19, 2010:
Ah - but these are "self-selected" volunteers who have been canvassed through broad poster, radio or TV campaigns
philgoddard Nov 19, 2010:
I don't think "voluntary" is right. All responses to market research are voluntary, as opposed to compulsory. If your friend is correct, Louis' suggestion of unsolicited would be better.
You say there is no context, but that seems very unlikely. There is almost always some, and without it we're just guessing.
Joanne Nebbia (asker) Nov 19, 2010:
that should be "responses" of course (must get a new keyboard)
Joanne Nebbia (asker) Nov 19, 2010:
Thank you everyone for input - but have just had a phone call from a friend who works in market research who tells me this is almost certainly "voluntary repsonses" it comes under the heading of "voluntary samples" - meaning those who have voluntarily contributed opinions through radio phone-ins or web forums etc. (i.e nobody asked!)
Rebecca Davis Nov 19, 2010:
Not sure I can post it as a separate answer, so have added it to the original one
Joanne Nebbia (asker) Nov 19, 2010:
damn - wrote seperate again ... I do know its spelt separate
Joanne Nebbia (asker) Nov 19, 2010:
Having said that ... voluntary comments is looking like a sound option at the moment and I will possibly use it. Can you post it as a seperate answer?
Joanne Nebbia (asker) Nov 19, 2010:
I know you did - and it is a perfectly good translation of the phrase, I just cant find any references for it in this context (I also thought of voluntary statements ... but that only gets hits for insurance and crime!) glad I'm not the only one up early!
Rebecca Davis Nov 19, 2010:
...I meant it in the sense of voluntary comments contributed by people when canvassed...nothing to do with NI!
Joanne Nebbia (asker) Nov 19, 2010:
sorry everyone - there really isn't any more context - I am translating a "how to" guide on running mobility projects and this section deals with gathering public informatoin and opinions... I am not convinced (sorry Rebbeca) by voluntary contributions as it is (was) in common use for NI contributions in the UK. I think it is more a term which defines information (contributions) which are given other than in answer to a questionnaire ... if that exists
Rosa Paredes Nov 18, 2010:
Context?
philgoddard Nov 18, 2010:
Canvassing for what? Can we have a bit more context?

agree Marian Vieyra : Was going to agree before reading discussion, now definitely agree. Perhaps even just "comments" or just "feedback".
