All PhDs are doctorates. Not all doctorates are PhDs.
Several professional schools offer doctorates that are not PhDs. These include Medicine (MD), Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Dental Science (DDS or DMD), Law (JD), Education (EdD or DEd), Divinity (DD) and business (DBA).
A doctorate is the highest degree awarded in a university. A PhD is a type of doctorate. PhD is the abbreviation for Doctor of Philosophy.
