French term

Transports Durant

French to English Other Management
The initial letters are capitalised in the original phrase:
La prestation de conduite du Dumper est sous traitée aux 'Transports Durant'. (my inverted commas)

It refers to an industrial accident caused by the careless management of a dumper and appears in a training programme for crisis management

I assumed that 'Transport Durant' was some kind of organisation which deals with such matters but I can't find any refs to it anywhere.

The translation has to be finished by 8am GMT!! Arrggg!

Many thanks for your help

There is no mention of a country- but the idea of a name sounds quite likely (now why didn't I think of that? ) I suppose I was too busy going down the avenue of a government department....
Travelin Ann Oct 21, 2010:
Do you know where the accident took place - what country? That might help find the company, to be certain. But, I agree, it looks like a name, so does not need to be translated.
AllegroTrans Oct 21, 2010:
Sounds like Durant is a name and therefore you have no need to translate it

Transports Durant

It's most likely the name of the company to which the work was sub-contracted. Do not translate.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I think it's more likely to be Durand (which gets some Google hits).

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks to everyone for your useful comments- it is good to talk! In fact the name was mis-spelt- it was 'Transports Durand, and, of course did not need translating. I dont know who to give the points to as everyone said something helpful so I will leave it open. Also- surely it doent need to go in the gloss as it is just a question of a name not needing to be translated. Once agin many thanks for your help"

Smith Shipping Co.

"Durant" is a very common family name in France (like Dupont or Martin), very often used as virtual/fake names for examples/stories/movies.
This company name is only used as an example to illustrate a case study... just like Smith, Thomson or Jones in English.
Peer comment(s):

agree Sandra Petch : As this is for a training progamme, I agree it's a fictious company for illustration purposes.
7 hrs
neutral Jennifer Levey : Regardless of whether or not it's ficticious, there's no need to change it from 'Durant', which more common in English (47 million Ghits) than Dupont is in French (barely 20 MGhits).
