Discussion

philgoddard Sep 8, 2010:
That helps a lot. It's not a designation of origin, then.
Freimanis (asker) Sep 8, 2010:
I don't think it has any significant meaning. Latvia has drafted a regulation which seems to contradict the EU regulation. Here/hence/in this case...
philgoddard Sep 8, 2010:
What does "hier" refer to? Could you give us a bit more context?

In this instance "of origin" not applicable
Note from asker:
I think they refer to the Single CMO Regulation (Council Regulation No 1234/2007 of 22 October 2007) and what confuses me is the "protection of designations" which is not used in this document at all.
Peer comment(s):

agree Thomas Pfann : Agree. The phrase "protection of designations" is used throughout said regulation. Can't post a link, but if you google "2007R1234— EN" you can download the regulation in PDF format.

protection of names

This press release in English uses "protection of names" where the German version says "Bezeichnungsschutz"

... it should be pointed out that while the Community's legislation on geographical indications and designations of origin enables names to be protected, it does not outlaw the manufacture and sale of similar products under other names provided this does not damage the protected designation.

Just an idea ...
