English term

Incident fracture

English to Hebrew Medical Medical (general)
From questionnaire to patients in risk of osteoporosis:

"Doctor will ask you about your socioeconomic status, previous and incident fractures, and risk factors of osteoporosis."

I don't understand how to translate "Incident" in this context.

Discussion

Olga Ryznar, MD (asker) Jul 21, 2010:
From the articles, it is mostly, but not limited to microfructures of the spine, and it is may-be not totally spontaneous, but related to event which normally wouldn't cause a fracture in a healthy person.
I think I'll go for a long: שברים בעקבות טראומה מינורית which kind of covers all points.
meirs Jul 21, 2010:
poor ST phrasing to begin with incident (spontaneous) as opposed to accident (known external cause) ?

incident

the term incident in this context, is "borrowed" from statistics.

researchers of fractures due to osteoporosis are interested in distinguishing between
the prevalence of fractures and incidence of fractures in the populations they study.
many, if not all, pts enrol in these studies with pre-existing fractures.
thus the population in these studies has a high prevalence of fractures, to begin with.

one of the primary goals of the osteoporosis studies is to observe the number of
new fractures that these pts develop over a specifically defined time interval, which is usually
the study follow-up period after receiving the intervention.
the rate of new fractures over a specific period of time = incidence.
hence the term "incident fractures" - another way of saying, new fractures observed over a
defined period of time.

in your study questionnaire, pts are asked:
how many fractures have you have to date = I have had 5 previous fractures
and how many have you had in the last 12 months since you started taking the "magic pill" we gave you = I have had 1 fracture.
ergo - this pt has had 1 incident fracture.

in Hebrew
prevalence = שכיחות
incidence = היארעות, הימצאות, שיעור .......לאורך זמן מוגדר

I think היארעות may be a bit "too fancy" a word for the regular patient.
maybe: how many fractures have you had since ... / in the past ....
or something similar.
כמה שברים חדשים היו לך מאז ש

Thank you for the detailed answer. I just don't really know how to put it in the context. Do you think something like this makes sence? הרופא ישאל אותך על מצבך הסוציו-אקונומי, שברים קודמים והיארעות שברים בתקופה האחרונה
Thank you very much, you helped alot.

Methods of defining incident fractures
Several approaches to identification of a new vertebral fracture were described in detail by Black. They concluded that a 20-25% reduction in any vertebral height (anterior, posterior or middle) was the most practical method of assessing an incident fracture. Other studies also require a 4mm absolute loss of height compared to the previous xray. Lunt et al found that combining these criteria with a requirement that the newly fractured vertebra also met the definition of a prevalent fracture increased the specificity.

תודה על התשובה, אך לא נראה לי שזה מתאים, איך רופא יכול לשאול על משהו שעשוי להתרחש?
