Japanese term
濁りのない
Japanese to English

Cosmetics, Beauty
Lip gloss
I see this term a lot in various cosmetics texts. All I can get from dictionaries is (not) cloudy, etc. But in a makeup context, what exactly does that mean? The closest I can come up with is "sheer" or "translucent," but "sheerness" is not always a selling point for color makeup. Thanks in advance for your input!

- 濁り is defined as muddiness, impurity, cloudy, unrefined (Nelson’s Japanese Character Dictionary)
- 濁りのない literally means “non-muddy” but that may not be such a beautiful word in describing lip gloss. (“Murky” is another word often used as a negative adjective to describe bad lip glosses.)
- I think the word “sheer” that you mention above is a great word that's regularly used with makeup of all sorts. "Sheer" used with colors in make-up has a fresh, clean, translucent feeling--the opposite of the feeling of being thick, muddy or murky.
- Here is a website that says the color “looks very muddy brown in the tube but is a surprisingly “sheer” bronzy shade….

Sheer Cola looks very muddy brown in the tube, but is a surprisingly sheer bronzy shade with a touch a plum and mauve and a gorgeous sparkle and shine.

What a revelation: Silky, subtle, easily blended, no matter what kind of foundation or skin underneath. Dries to a glowy, silky/powdery, non-muddy finish with – what? – gentle magic?

The colors are sheer (Origins calls it "barely there") and there are 10 shades to choose from. $14.50

Lavera Lipgloss- These non-sticky, sheer but shimmery lipglosses I have been using since I was 14 years old!
- Just for contrast, here are some examples of the word “muddy” for lip glosses. "Muddy" is bad.

ALL LIPS ON DECK for some hubby smooching without the complaint of "muddy" lips and typical lip gloss taste.

This gloss does have three colors, all pretty close to each other and all with the same level of light shimmer. They blend together on the wand, but rather than becoming muddy they seem to add depth and look amazing once applied.

You can apply lip-gloss too. You should completely avoid shimmer shades on lips. Also avoid those tones like beige, taupe or earthy tones that look muddy in office lights.
