The Legal Sciences degree requires three years of study (180 credits) culminating in the award of a “laurea.” Graduates receive preparation based on interdisciplinary knowledge to enter into professional activities such as business, public administration and social services. The program can also prepare graduates for the continuation of further studies in pursuit of a specialized Law degree, qualifying graduates for legal practice as a judge, notary public and research lawyer.

The degree in Legal Sciences provides the basic knowledge of legal, economic and historical-philosophical instruments and the acquisition of complementary concepts in related disciplines, of informatics as well as the practical knowledge of a language of the European Union. The program requires 180 credits.

Juris Doctor (see etymology and abbreviations below) is a professional doctorate[1][2][3][4][5][6] and first professional degree[7][8] in Law. The degree was first awarded by Harvard University in the United States in the late 19th century as a degree similar to the old European doctor of law degree (such as the Dottore in Giurisprudenza in Italy and the Juris Utriusque Doctor). Originating from the 19th century Harvard movement for the scientific study of law, it is the only American law degree that has a goal of being the primary professional preparation for lawyers and the only professional degree in law. It is a three year program in most jurisdictions.[9][10] As with other professional doctorates in the United States and Canada (M.D., D.O., D.D.S., etc.), a research dissertation or thesis is not required. This degree primarily exists in the United States, but since about 1997[citation needed] it has appeared in universities in other countries for the first time, although it has a unique form in each country.
