push the artists to new heights
I'm not sure this is quite right but it's something else to work on. I feel the idea is positive, bringing out the best in the artists etc.

: not sure how artists' creativity can be defied. Challenged, perhaps?

defy with fervour
Just another option as I agree with Hamidou's suggestion.
And I definitely think paroxysm in English isn't an option
I do think it would be good to keep the sense of passion that there is in the original.

and Jim has a point about "defy" it might be better to use "champion" in this case

An alternative to Hamidou's suggestion which seems good to me

produce/cause an explosion
Perhaps this is what they mean - given your additional context? Please produce an artwork related to the theme of creating a paroxysm in someone -either of rage or laughter. I don't think paroxysm would work in EN. Hence my approximation.... cause an explosion of laughter or rage

carfeul - paroxysme is pretty ultimate. And you could say 'this year's ultimate challenge"
The important point is that we are talking about challenging artists

Note from asker:
I think ultimate is going too far - as they are challenged by a theme every year. Stiff, severe...? |

Discussion
Maybe that could result in paroxysm, artistic paroxysm? Produce laughter, rage? "Severe challenge" definitely seems the easiest solution but is pretty banal?
