English term

retort

English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng chemical engineering
The most widely used systems are vertical batch retorts, with a lid at the top,
which are cylindrical pressure vessels operating at temperatures usually between
100 and 140◦C.

Quisiera saber si el término retort significa "autoclave".Porque en diccionarios aparece como "retorta", pero ésto no se asemeja a la explicación que entrega el texto original.

retort/autoclave

The original meaning of retort is an old-fashioned distillation vessel made of glass, as in the link given by jccantrell (these days most often replaced with a distillation flask with a condenser). Nowadays 'retort' is often used as a synonym of autoclave, especially for steam pressure sterilisation (from what I've found).

agree Filippe Vasconcellos de Freitas Guimarães : Absolutely. In fact, the Portuguese translation for "vertical batch retort" is "AUTOCLAVE de batelada vertical".

glass vessel used for heating substances in labs

Retort was originally used to mean specifically shaped glass vessels or chambers in which substances were distilled or decomposed by heat. The older retort was a glass container shaped like a ball with a long narrow tube at one side.
