My understanding of the text is that "L'examen est réalisé.....en utilisant la technique de sondage....", ie it's not a welding process but an inspaection process. It's not clear whether this is a light beam or beam of ultrasound, but I'm not clear as to the distinction between a direct beam/ray and a reflected beam/ray in this technique. "Sondage" as in "sonde", but you could just translate "sondage" as "inspection".

disagree chris collister : Sorry, Liz, it's "sondage" not "soudage"! The word is related to "sonde", and the "rayon" is a beam of light (or ultrasound) for inspection purposes.
