German term

Selbstleben

German to English Other Philosophy Platonism
"Er (Augustine) durchbricht aber diesen Kreis (den Gedanken-Kreise der Platonnismus) und eröffney neue Bahnen, indem das Verlangen nach mehr Kraft und Selbstleben ihn den Kern der Seele nicht mehr im Erkennen, sondern im Wollen suchen heisst."

This is all the context I have.

Discussion

Jim Tucker (X) Apr 29, 2010:
Augustine is not Augustus ...just for the record.
Michél Dallaserra Apr 29, 2010:
Augustine Should be: "Augustus" OR "Augustinus"
Andy S (asker) Apr 29, 2010:
Type of text This is the entire job with no context at all.

http://tinyurl.com/38hl5rf tells us Augustine was a Christian philosopher.
Michél Dallaserra Apr 29, 2010:
heisst should be: "heißt".
Michél Dallaserra Apr 29, 2010:
[...] der Platonnismus Should be: "des Platonismus".
Andy S (asker) Apr 29, 2010:
eröffney/t The typo I can see - what other mistakes?
Michél Dallaserra Apr 29, 2010:
In fact the text contains a few mistakes.
Michél Dallaserra Apr 29, 2010:
Couple of questions What kind of text is that? Is it an old text?

(individual) autonomy

Or self-determination, or self-reliance.

agree Johanna Timm, PhD : based on the overall context (quoted in the reference section) this fits well. The author uses "Selbstleben" also when referring to Nietzsche and other 'modern' philosophers ( i.e. it's not an 'Augustine'-specific term)

Peer comment(s):

neutral Jim Tucker (X) : Pretty much only a Heideggerian would translate it like this, to make the provenance clear. It's a practical solution in that context but otherwise very 20th-century, and hence an anachronism for Augustine. // "autonomy" is also a philosophical term.

Philosophical language should be used and not ordinary, everyday language.

awareness of self

"Er (Augustine) durchbricht aber diesen Kreis (den Gedanken-Kreise der Platonnismus) und eröffney neue Bahnen, indem das Verlangen nach mehr Kraft und Selbstleben ihn den Kern der Seele nicht mehr im Erkennen, sondern im Wollen suchen heisst."

individual awareness or awareness of self would be my suggestion, this is tricky though

Thankyou
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jim Tucker (X) : needs to be in the same category as "Kraft" -- in other words, it's active. The passage specifically says that this quality goes beyond recognition into more active will. In other words, it's something stronger than self-awareness.

Life, which we ourselves are, is always “my life”, “your life”, “our life” etc. Life is always somebody’s life. In other words, life is always the life of a self: a self-life (Selbstleben).
