All Tabatieres were converted muzzle loaders The Tabatiere was always the result of a conversion from muzzle loading to breechloading. This conversion kept obsolete weapons in use in the mid-19th century. It was only used on a few gun models, as this conversion turned out to be kind of iffy in practice. The T. itself was obsolete by the 1870s.

However it's the only reference on the internet, hence low confidence level as nothing else to confirm it.
