Discussion

Jack den Haan (asker) Mar 4, 2010:
@C Gille Yes, I agree with you and think that 'case worker' is the best option in my case. I have entered other suggestions in the glossary too, however, because I think they could be applicable in other situations. To my mind, the term 'trajectbegeleider' has a kind of inherent vagueness about it...
Carolyn Gille Mar 4, 2010:
Caseworker Have a look here: http://www.ehow.com/about_5142304_caseworker-description-job...
Maybe this will help to make the def of caseworker more clear, and help you decide if this is exactly what you mean.
Jack den Haan (asker) Mar 3, 2010:
@Sindy Inderdaad. Had ik over het hoofd gezien. Bedankt Sindy.
sindy cremer Mar 3, 2010:
Jack, is er niet een hokje "Gloss" links naast het vakje "Answer" als je de vraag weer opent?
Jack den Haan (asker) Mar 3, 2010:
Glossary Further to my grading remark, I don't seem to be able to include terms in the KudoZ Open Glossary once the question has been closed. Sorry about that. And of course I was referring to Lipabel's apprehensions, not Sindy's!
sindy cremer Mar 2, 2010:
@ Lipabel: it's actually quite popular with Flemish authorities, but I find it a horrific solution :)
André Linsen Mar 2, 2010:
@ Sindy:
I must admit that this is one I hadn't heard before!
I forgot the ones I use most: integration path counsellor/integration counsellor (I often work in social integration and refugee environment) and personal consultant (for VDAB, Flemish Job Search and Training Agency).

Personally, I am not in favor of case worker, project manager nor project supervisor as suggested by our collegues. "Trajectbegeleiding" is all about people, the suggested translations make me feel as if the people have become "things".
sindy cremer Mar 2, 2010:
addition to Lipabels's list "route counsellor" appears to be widely used in Belgium!!
André Linsen Mar 2, 2010:
"trajectbegeleider" is one of those words that give me headaches too when I need to translate them. There are so many different circumstances in which it is used, and even more different translations to be found:
program assistant (Nijmegen, begeleiding van nieuwkomers)
learning path counsellor (Universiteit Gent)
guidance counsellor (Vlaanderen, inburgering)
job coach (België, start-labor)
handling officer (Sweden, refugees)
dean (Nijmegen, scholen)
career advice coach (Vlaanderen, werkloosheidsbegeleiding)
individual vocational guidance (trajectbegeleiding, Nederland, vrouwengevangenis)
I have also used personal coach, mentor and tutor is some cases.

case worker

I'm not sure if this is exactly the term you are looking for. It would depend upon the context. If it has to do with social work, than it's appropriate.

In social work, a caseworker is a type of social worker who is employed by a government agency, non-profit organization, or other group to take on the cases ... and follow them through.

sorry, it came out as two words, but I think it's supposed to be 'caseworker'.
Example sentence:

The caseworker was assigned to her, and he provide her with advocacy, information or other services.

Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : It's an option, quite common social work or health care. I would say two words is fine.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I opted for 'case worker', despite Sindy's apprehensions, but many other suggestions would have worked too. I 'll include them in the KudoZ glossary. Thank you all for your help!"

project supervisor

Een idee. Veel hits op Google.
Example sentence:

The Project Supervisor, along with program assistants, works with partnering agencies throughout King County to provide no-interest loans and grants to residents of King County who are in danger of losing their housing.

Assure HSC undertakes the role of Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP), on a project-by-project basis.

personal coach

This is a long shot, but in view of your examples...
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : If it is a job 'in the social welfare or educational setting', then this is very likely it.

agree Kate Hudson (X)

agree sindy cremer : I've also come across "personal counsellor"

agree Mark Straver : Either your term or Sindy's alternative would work well.

disagree Carolyn Gille : to me a 'personal coach' is something rich people spend a lot of money on. A caseworker is something totally different. It's refering to the person who is responsible for following a person (usually in a government institution) from start to finish

As with our translation projects
Peer comment(s):

neutral Oliver Pekelharing : but do you call your project managers 'trajectbegeleiders'?
