Virginia Infantry in May 1862; commissioned 30 Jun 1862. He was
commissioned First Lieutenant 8 Nov 1862. In June 1863, the 3rd Infantry was
changed to the 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry. On January 26, 1864, the
3rd Mounted Infantry was designated the 6th West Virginia Cavalry. Postwar,
Sommerville was commissioned Captain on 1 Nov 1865.
