Paula Vaz-Carreiro Dec 29, 2009:
About the order of adjectives Sorry I couldn't come back on this as soon as I promised - too much to do.
Anyway, here is one of many sites on this subject. This one even has some exercises at the bottom.

http://www.myenglishteacher.net/adjectivesorder.html

I hope this helps to explain what I was trying to say. Thanks.

Concordo com a Marlene: nota 4.
amarante dasilva Dec 23, 2009:
happy little prospector's dance.... é um ponto interessante, esse da Paula e talvez requere um pouco de debate. Na frase: "They hopped --- into the HAPPY prospector's LITTLE dance", a sugestão dela faria sentido porém na frase: HAPPY LITTLE prospector's dance, fica bem claro que o adjetivo precedente ao substantivo "prospector" não descreve a dança e sim o "garimpeiro"......isto é sómente uma sugestâo pr'a ver o que pessoal pensa.
Beta Cummins Dec 23, 2009:
little dance, no big trouble Paula,
I sure appreciate your willingness to explain. We'll get back to it tomorrow : )
Paula Vaz-Carreiro Dec 23, 2009:
To Beta: I have just double-checked with my husband and he accepts that there is an apparent ambiguity but he says that if you are a native you just know that "little" refers to the dance. It has to do with the order in which adjectives appear. There are rules about whether colour adjectives should appear before size adjectives, for example, and more - I'm sorry I haven't the time to look for references just now but I'll try tomorrow. Thanks for your patience :-)

Beth

O nome da dança é mesmo "Happy Prospector Dance" conforme o vídeo abaixo. (uma alusão à dança de felicidade do garimpeiro ao encontrar um filão de ouro).

Quanto a "pequeno/a", pode tanto se referir ao pequeno garimpeiro, trantando-se de um livro infantil, ou à dança propriamento dita, dependendo do seu contexto.

Grata!
agree Paula Vaz-Carreiro : Yes, and the word 'little' in the original sentence refers to the dance (not the age of the prospector like the other answers suggest).//I was saying that your answer is the only right one. The word little REFERS to the DANCE and nothing else.

dança dos felizes mineiros pequenos (e.g. miner for gold)

a prospector = auqele que trabalha nas minas, ex: those working on a gold mine...prospecting for gold, minerals, etc
Peer comment(s):

disagree Paula Vaz-Carreiro : I'm sorry to have to disagree but the word 'little' in the original sentence refers to the dance, not the age of the prospector// :-) I wouldn't have remembered either. But please see my discussion entry about the other of adjectives. Boas festas.

disagree Paula Vaz-Carreiro : I'm sorry to have to disagree but the word 'little' in the original sentence refers to the dance, not the age of the prospector.//I checked it with my (British) husband before I posted my disagree...I just don't know how to explain why it is the dance :-(

No problem Paula, we're all together in this! I do think however that if "little" referred to the dance, then it would read "prospector's little dance", as opposed to "little prospector's dance". Paula, I probably should've asked my American hubby as well
