root-ball = the 'ball' of earth that would come out of the ground with the roots of a plant if you were trying to transplant it.

I can't think of a particular term for this in PT but I think the above sense captures the meaning.

'sob a terra', yes indeed. I suppose that is better for Brazilian portuguese. Thanks a lot Marcelo.
