Dutch term

verwaarden

Dutch to English Marketing Food & Drink
I know the term "verwaarding" appears in the glossary, but I still don't really understand it.

This is my context:

"Nu de melkquota worden losgelaten [and I'm assuming they mean relaxed, rather than scrapped at this stage, since we've got a few years to go before that happens], moeten we in de toekomst 15 tot 20 procent meer melk kunnen verwaarden."

Discussion

solejnicz Nov 24, 2009:
I think you are right in introducing the term "production".
Oliver Pekelharing Nov 24, 2009:
Produce and sell I'm not familiar with the term, so this is just a tentative suggestion, but I guess once the quotas are gone they'll be able to produce (and sell) that much more milk (apparently there's a market for it).

increase the value

"Verwaarden" has a broader meaning; see again the reference

Of course "value" means the same here as "economic value".
Example sentence:

Verwaarding van rundvlees uit de Nederlandse biologische melkveehouderij

Increasing the value of beef production on Dutch organic dairy farms

agree MoiraB : in other words a better economic return from livestock production ;-) It always boils down to money in the end.

Yes, but economic return is not the ONLY thing involved though it is the main target, that is what I wanted to say. Thanks.
agree writeaway : also a possible translation of valoriser . exactly as it stands in RC dico

turn into money = sell

I had a look at the discussion at proz you are refering to:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/dutch_to_english/other/564997-verw...

The selected answer comes from an online dictionary:
http://www.websters-online-dictionary.net/translation/Dutch/...

But this doesn't help much. The other answers provide more information. Verwaarding or het verwaarden means turning something (a product) into money. And although this is a specific word used in agriculture, I think there is nothing wrong with saying "to sell".

Some context: production of milk is not the same as selling it. Not all the milk that is produced on a farm is necessarily offer to the factory. This depends on the contract between farmer and factory, and of course the production quota. Under this system, it is even possible for a farmer to be fined (!) for offering more milk to the factory than agreed. So the amount of milk offered and accepted and financially compensated is the "verwaarde" quanity of milk.

monetise

The term 'monetise' is sometimes used in marketing speak to talk about how something can be used to make money.

better economic return

It was me who asked the other question in the glossary and I'm still trying to get to grips with this term (!) It seems to me that it's all about getting added value out of the product (animal carcasses, milk, whatever) in order to get a better economic return off the animals. So you could interpret this as getting a better/increased economic return from milk production/yield.

Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : a spin-off of the French valoriser imho /EU-speak inspired?

stone me, never occurred to me, as the term first came up in Dutch (NL) meat processing texts, but you could be right!
neutral Max Nuijens : "economic return" would be right; with "BETTER economic" return you introduce an aspect that is not in the source. I would be very surprised if "verwaarding" has a French/EU origin.

I infer it from the figures mentioned in the source. I don't think the Dutch can be interpreted in a straightforward way.
neutral solejnicz : I am not sure if this is only about economic return; see the reference.

It all comes down to making more profit, and I think your reference indicates that, too.

convert into money

Simply “in waarde omzetten” imo, (not “increasing” value)

Peer comment(s):

neutral solejnicz : I think this definition is too limited. I do not see either how "verwaarden tot groentesappen" fits your translation.

"verwaarden" in more context

Could "verwaarden" have a broader meaning than just economic?

I mean, "verwaarden" seems to me mean more than just "sell/yield profit".
Example sentence:
