Hattie Spence (asker) Nov 25, 2009:
Thanks for your support, Andrew, in the end I chose mystery phrase, so you should really get the points. As it is, I'll have to close the questions without grading, but thanks to all for their contributions!
Lancashireman Nov 20, 2009:
nur? 'Mystery sentence' is perfect for this context, though it is more likely to be a 'mystery phrase'.

missing sentence

Mystery sentence sounds a bit strange to my ears. I would consider missing sentence - the one that particpants have to 'find' and (presumably) fill in.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lancashireman : 'Mystery word/phrase/number' is the standard expression. In what sense has the sentence gone 'missing'? // It appears to be a stand-alone sentence. 'Missing' works for words represented by a gap in an otherwise fully formed sentence.

missing in the sense that it is absent, that it needs to found (and perhaps filled in) in the same way as one fills in the missing gaps of a sentence or the missing part of a puzzle
agree rogerbaker : I would agree, mystery phrase.
