English term

doodlebug

English Other Military / Defense
Hello,
Could anyone help me with the meaning of this term? I have a text where it refers to the V1 rockets of WWII, but I am having difficulties translating it since I don't know its reference. Wikipedia tells me several possible meanings (bug, divining rod, larva).
Thank you,
Cristi

ah, yes that would be difficult :-)
Cristian Brinza (asker) Oct 18, 2009:
subtitling It's rather difficult to add a footnote in subtitling :).
Maria Fokin Oct 18, 2009:
I agree I also don't think the nickname needs translation. Leaving it as it is and just adding an explanatory note should suffice IMXO
Bashiqa Oct 18, 2009:
Doodlebug Leave it as it is depending on who you are translating for.

The Fieseler Fi 103, better known as V-1 (German: Vergeltungswaffe 1 (German for "vengeance weapon"), colloquially know in Britain as the 'Doodlebug', was an early cruise missile used during World War II.

The simple pulse jet engine pulsed 50 times per second,[2] and the characteristic buzzing sound gave rise to the colloquial names "buzz bomb" or "doodlebug" (a common name for a wide variety of insects).
(same wiki page as before)

so it was named doodlebug just because it sounded like an insect when launched.

agree Jack Doughty : I remember, at age 13, throwing myself off my bicycle when the engine of one of them cut out just above me. But it travelled a further half-mile before landing and exploding.

thank you, i did include that its an early cruise missile regardless i don't think that's important, the nickname is for the whole package, including the bomb. besides the asker is already familiar with what a V1 is.
