French term

tonneau à cascade

French to English Other Tourism & Travel theme park
Can someone suggest a suitable name for this ride in an aqua park? I have no description of it (it's in an index, no picture either) but assume you sit inside a contraption and shoot down a water slide. Can't think of the English equivalent as I'm not a devotee of theme parks!

Discussion

Graham macLachlan Oct 12, 2009:
ah! do you have some extra context?
janisct (asker) Oct 12, 2009:
See my recent note to Bourth - having seen the photo on the link, I now know what is meant. I just need to put it into words...
Graham macLachlan Oct 12, 2009:
It's definitely in a water park but, however likely, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a water ride... or does it?

This site
http://www.techno-loisirs.com/page34/page34.html
refers to tonneau (indépendante) à cascade as part of a "Kiddy Village", which appears to be something for toddlers/tiny tots, so I imagine it's not anything particularly adventurous, as seen from an adult perspective. It might be as simple as a waterfall coming out of a barrel.
Who knows? Well, some of the people that have one. Using the addresses on the site above and pagesjaunes.fr you might be able to track someone down.

TIPPING BARREL
Facilities and Entertainment
The place is obviously for kids with playgrounds, kids clubs and kids discos and there was even a new kids play pool, with a great pirate theme (the TIPPING BARREL was a real winner), but that did not stop couples having a great time too.

This 40,000 sq. ft. water park includes several family-friendly chutes, water cannons, A TIPPING BARREL, slides and a beach area.

Ref. to tipping buckets and TIPPING BARRELS here too:

One new attraction which I did not notice was this.
In a nutshell, its just a big TIPPING BARREL when full.
But later on, I saw a lot of people underneath it,
waiting for it to tip over. Just like the Lat cartoon
when everyone was saving water during bath time

I believe you can award points anyway, and make the appropriate glossary entry.
Note from asker:
This was very helpful, and I now think that what is involved is indeed a frame with a barrel full of water that tips up and showers the people stupid enough to stand underneath, so it's nothing at all to do with log flumes. You don't actually get into the barrel. Many thanks for the link
Could you please enter your suggestion as 'tipping barrel' so that I can award you the points? Thanks again

log flume , barrel flume, barrel splash

Difficult to know with so little context but 'log flume' seems to be a common term for this type of ride (lots of hits on Google). (My kids certainly know what this is!). Perhaps 'barrel flume' or 'barrel splash' might be closer to the source text.
Peer comment(s):

agree Evans (X) : log flume is certainly a familiar term, an adaptation of this should work, as you suggest

barrel ride

if you're sure it's a water rides how about "barrel water ride"

in any case cf.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_ride

however it may be on dry land:

Crazy Barrel Ride. A fairground ride similar to ‘The Waltzer’. Seated in large barrels which rotate around the ride.

barrel falls

Barreled over / cooper's splash /

just 3 ideas

As Bourth says; careful. This seems to be a big, tipped, open ended wooden bucket at a height - pouring water over a swimming or paddling pool forming a 'fall'.
Cooper's spash may be sufficiantly vague, or too much of a 'thinker's' answer?
Note from asker:
I'm afraid I think it's a bit too clever - what child these days would know what a cooper is, sadly?
Peer comment(s):

agree Graham macLachlan : "cooper's splash" :))

Thank you, Graham.
agree Claire Cox : cooper's splash sounds good to me - whilst being sufficiently vague to cover a multitude of options

This seems to be a picture of it, taken from Bourth's reference and described by Melzie. Not sure what we call it though.

I think either of your suggestions would work. I have seen references for a 'Tidal Barrel' which is along the same lines (Tidal Bucket in the US) but I think it's a registered trademark. In any case, it's not exactly the same thing.
Note from asker:
Yes he's absolutely right, and like you, I've no idea what we would call it!! I think I'll just have to call it 'barrel splash' or 'tipping barrel'...
