Here is my sentence:
Non cedo né alle lusinghe, né alle minacce piú o meno velate. Come soldato sono forte del dovere compiuto, come cittadino ho la coscienza tranquilla: ho il diritto di pensare con la mia testa...
I know pretty much what it means, but for the life of me I can't think of how to say it in English. I'm tempted just to say: "As a soldier, I have done my duty."
Suggestions are appreciated.

To know
"As a soldier I know I have done my duty..." I would do it this way and not be swayed by the individual words at the expense of losing the force and meaning of the whole statement.

Comment: "Thanks, Jim. In fact, after Claudio answered with "confident of" I realized myself I could use "know," and that's what I was planning to do when your answer popped up. I also like "doing" duty more than "carrying it out" or "fulfilling" it. "

I didn't choose your answer, Claudio, but it was enlightening. |
