Trop de tendresse frise la mollesse

French to English Other Marketing
Hi

This is from a quiz about dating guys aimed at (I'm guessing) teenagers and young women. When they've completed the quiz they find out which bag in the range best matches their personality.

This question asks how they feel about tenderness in a man. The pattern of answers is always Answer 1/ I love this quality Answer 2/ I don't mind this quality and Answer 3/ this drives me mad (disguised as different answers, obviously).

In this case, Answer 3/ is "trop de tendresse frise la mollesse."

I have "It's a fine line between tenderness and sloppiness" (sloppy as in sentimental) but I'm sure there are better solutions!

Many thanks for your help.

There is a fine line between tender and soppy.

Just a little comment. Sloppiness means messiness. Soppy is the word you should use (as in sentimental)
Note from asker:
You're absolutely right, oops, I was the one being sloppy!
Peer comment(s):

Excessive tenderness bordering on mushiness

...or something along those lines. (Alternatively "...to the point of mushiness".)

I realise that "mushiness" is a little dubious; I felt that "mushy" better captured the sense of "mollesse", but couldn't find a tidy way to use the adjective "mushy" instead of the noun "mushiness" without making the whole somewhat cumbersome.
Peer comment(s):

agree Lianne Wilson : Mushiness sounds a fine word to me, not at all dubious.

Gentle to the point of weakness

I think it just means that a guy who is too soft and gentle will come over as a weakling
Peer comment(s):

agree MatthewLaSon : You have the right meaning. I don't agree with many of the interpretations here.

Too soppy by far

Bordering/Verging on the sentimental

Sentimental to make you cringe

as this is a sort of heading, I'd try to keep it fairly simple, even if that means losing the ST construction

Too soft is like having no spine

Hello,

You don't want to be so soft and tender that makes you look like you have no backbone. It's unattractive in a man. I believe that's what they are saying here.

Can't keep the rhyme in French...I wish I could

I hope this helps.
