Discussion

Eva Smith Oct 1, 2009:
Ann Marie thanks...I had a little time and did a little research (Greek legal and American legal assists) and used my native Greek to come up with the following:
(I am writing in latin keyboard on purpose)

Complaint is kataggelia
Charge/ cahrged is the katigoria (with eeta H not Iota)
lawsuit is Agogi
Trial is Diki
Impeachment is Kataggelia (President Nixon was impeached and President Clinton almost got impeached)
Indictement it the katigoritirio (the one the Distrixct Attorney calls out during the trial in a lawsuit when one is charged after a complaint is filed)

amgt Sep 30, 2009:
μήνυση Per my old dictionary by Arnold Mandeson, μήνυση is translated as: complaint, charge, lawsuit, impeachment and finally indictment. So pick your choice.
Ellen Kraus Sep 29, 2009:
Eva, I definitely agree that it is high time we stop arguing, because I cant help feeling that, for some reason or other, you are interested in interpreting my suggestions as inexpedient.
Eva Smith Sep 29, 2009:
Ellen, you are confusing me and I do not ant to continue on this issue... "Charging a person with something" is usually done by the Police...this is not a lawsuit! A complaint is not a lawsuit either! I only commented that eventhough you are translating this sentence as "charge against persons (or persons) unknown" which is wrong, you then write on your explanation "to institute legal proceedings against ..." which is a convoluted way of say filing a lawsuit but nevertheless much closer to the meaning of the greek word
υποβάλλω μήνυση indicated by Maria in her question....
Ellen Kraus Sep 29, 2009:
to Eva: pls. don´t mix up two different things. I said that μήνυση does NOT mean lawsuit (as you wrote) but is a synonym of καταγγελία ή καταμήνυση μιας αξιόποινης πράξης, και μηνύω σημαίνει υποβάλλω μήνυση.In German the term would be "Anzeige gegen Unbekannt erstatten". the latter you may find confirmed by Ath.G. Kaisis στο λεξικό νομικής ορολογίας.

neutral Eva Smith : institute legal proceedings against is the correct term = file a lawsuit against....I should have just sent a note to you...sorry I did read attentively ...reason why I asked sorry for repeating myself....

if you had read my suggestion attentively, you `d have noticed that I suggested both "to institute legal proceedings" AND to file a complaint against.... to file a lawsuit does not provide anything new or b etter..

Filed a lawsuit against person/persons unknown

μήνυση = lawsuit
μηνυω = file a lawsuit against.....

Peer comment(s):

disagree Ellen Kraus : sorry, but must contradict: μήνυση is not a lawsuit but " η δίκη" and "μηνυω " means το report so. to the police

I think you are totally wrong! Do you mean trial and lawsuit? these are two different things...You sue somebody and then you go to trial
disagree Krisztina Lelik : καταθέτω αγωγή = file a lawsuit.
