French term
Informations brutes
French to English
Medical
Medical (general)
I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with the translation of this phrase?
The sentence is:
La maladie d'Alzheimer touche les zones de cerveau intervenant dans la mémoire et dans la reconnaissance des informations brutes telles que les sons ou les images.
It appears within a patient information leaflet, so I am hoping to translate it with a term that is not overly-technical in order to keep the register relatively low.
Thank you in advance

another alternative that might fit the register intended.
Another alternative is "raw data", which is certainly correct also. The best choice depends on stylistic preferences for intended audience.

reflex/reflexes
I believe it may be something to do with reflexes but can't find a way of putting it into a sentence, hope it helps a little...
Most reflexes don't have to travel up to your brain to be processed, which is why they take place so quickly. A reflex action often involves a very simple ... for example - images and sound.
BRUTE can be interpreted as quick/simple as opposed to hard etc it depends on the context of the sentence i believe

Our cortex is constantly bombarded with information from our eyes, ears, and other sensory organs. One route for this pipeline sends a torrent of detailed, refined information from high-level cortical regions to the amygdala, which turbocharges the processing of fearful or other emotional stimuli at the expense of less urgent information. If you're driving and listening to the news on the radio when the driver in front of you taps the brakes, your attention will quickly drop off the news report and signal your foot to move to the brake pedal. A second, even faster pathway sends
crude information
from the senses through subcortical regions directly to the amygdala, bypassing the cortex altogether. If the car in front makes a full-fledged panic stop, this more primitive pathway signals you to slam on the brakes—even before the information reaches the cortical regions that make you conscious of your actions. The milliseconds' head start on your reaction may be enough to mean the difference between life and death.

Not necessarily, Lionel. For example, one gets 1000 two-digit numbers, that's the raw data. Après qu'on a troué la moyenne, la médiane, le mode, l'écart-type, etc. ces données brutes font plus de sens ...

Thereafter, the visual information is processed in a hierarchical manner through higher order visual cortical areas (V3, V4 and so on). Thus the "raw" data relating to the simple image components is combined; more features are added at each successive processing step, and the same information is encoded at increasingly larger scales. Thus, the initially crude representations of an image become more refined with each point in the hierarchy, until eventually an accurate reconstruction of the visual scene emerges into consciousness

Know Your Mind
We now know that something important is always going on inside our brain and, as Understanding the Brain illustrates, if you know what to look for, you can observe specific aspects of your own brain in action:
* Vision: The "now you see it, now you don't" feeling you get when you see an illusion is your brain trying to interpret raw data from the eyes. Far from taking a picture of the world and sending it to the brain, the eyes actually transmit very little information; "seeing" is a creation of the brain.
* Thought: Sometimes, you can have trouble thinking after taking an antihistamine. This is because antihistamines do not just combat the effects of an allergy, they also block histamine as a neurotransmitter in the brain, altering your ability to think and process information.
* Motor skills: When you learn how to walk, ride a bicycle, knit, dance, or perform some other motor skill, you reach a point where all of a sudden you are able to coordinate the new movement. That is because specialized neurons in your brain's cerebellum are now firing in sequence.
--------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------
Therefore
absolutely nothing wrong with raw data, with or without inverted commas.

: Liz, IMHO, talking about "data" for a brain is a metaphoric vision of this organ as a PC. A brain receive informations through sensory organs.
