English term

obtains

Non-PRO English Science Science (general) scientific writing
Multiplying by 100 obtains the mass percentage.

Is such a usage of "obtain" acceptable here?

Aug 13, 2009 14:20: Angela Dickson (X) changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): writeaway, Lingua.Franca, Angela Dickson (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

gives, yields

"Obtains" isn't right here - although it would be correct to say "Multiply by 100 to obtain the mass percentage".

agree Angela Dickson (X) : "obtains" is perfectly understandable, but intuitively we know it's not quite right.

agree Michael Barnett : "Obtain" used in this context is somewhat archaic and definitely formal. It is absolutely correct but not used frequently in everyday language.

Yes

What do you think is wrong with it?

obtains / to obtain

"Multiplying by 100 obtains the mass percentage."
Obtains would be used in the context of a worked answer

An instructional text would use the imperative:
"Multiply by 100 to obtain the mass percentage"

give / to give could be used to replace obtain / to obtain in the above

achieves

This is just another typically seen option, but one which I would prefer in this context. ;)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Angela Dickson (X) : I can't disagree with the fact that you prefer this, but I don't think it sounds right, myself, and I wouldn't agree it's typically seen.//I don't disagree that the words "achieves" "the" and "percentage" may appear together on lots of websites.

Results 1 - 10 of approximately 20,300,000 of "achieves the percentage" - so fairly typical ;)
disagree Cilian O'Tuama : a search for the exact term (i.e. within quotation marks) yields about 5 hits - so not so typical after all.

OK - the only one which gives any results with "" is "gives" - so go with that :)
