English term
unsold vehicles rushed to market in response to soaring gasoline prices
"Domestic and foreign auto manufacturers remain cautious about boosting production. Memories remain fresh, especially among U.S. manufacturers, of *unsold vehicles rushed to market in recent years in response to soaring gasoline prices*."
The second sentence confuses me - were vehicles rushed to market *because* of soaring gasoline prices? I assume that that higher gas prices would drive down car sales. Or could it be that those cars were rushed to market (perhaps at a discount) for fear of even higher gas prices, to avoid build-ups in inventories?
All ideas welcome! Thanks!
Non-PRO (1): writeaway
When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

The boosted production of "high mileage" cars and shipped them to market
My thought from the USA.

That should read "TheY boosted production ..."
this does seem to be a valid interpretation. This would explain why manufacturers are reluctant to increase output - the prospects for car sales - even higher mileage ones - remain gloomy . |
in response to = because of
then why pump more cars into the market? |

: Therefore manufacturers tried to get as many vehicles as possible sold before fuel prices went up even more and further depressed sales.

Agree. In fact, 'in response to' is better than 'because of'.

due to
Due to the rising gasoline prices, the manufacturers didn't want any unsold cars left as an inventory.

: Yes. The had been rushed to market, but remained unsold in response to the higher gas prices. The wording of the sentence is rather confusing.
