Discussion

MatthewLaSon Jul 30, 2009:
Agree with Ormiston These are not "current events". There is nothing that implies "current" in "faits de société." We aren't talking about "les actualités", necessarily.
ormiston Jul 30, 2009:
it helps! it now sounds 'deeper' than current affairs - reflections of Nature plus 'human' something or other....
janisct (asker) Jul 30, 2009:
he paints and works in glass. His theme is 'reflection' i.e. on life itself, and metaphorically with the regard to water and mirrors. Can't see that this is relevant to my question though!
ormiston Jul 30, 2009:
the artist could we have a clue about when/what he painted?

Peer comment(s):

agree eggsacion (X) : sounds closest to me - to me "faits de société" means not the political stuff but the murders, robberies and also trivia that we all like to read about so much!
16 hrs
Thanks eggsacion - I did wonder about what the difference is between 'fait divers' and "faits de société" but I concluded these were the stories that we are all generally interested in.

agree Helen Shiner : or possibly 'social truths' if that fits with the context.

Thanks Helen, although I'm not sure for social truths!
agree Linda Sansome (X) : Current affairs seems nearest to me - or current events?
11 mins
Thanks Linda. Current events sounds good too. Current affairs sounds a little formal, although it is what is says

neutral MatthewLaSon : Hi Julie. "Faits de société" are not necessarily current. I see your point, but I am not convinced that is the meaning here. Have a great evening.

Hi there Matt. Are you sure? from the examples I saw on google it did seem that way to me. I had also considered that he was talking about "real life", then thought that they would have phrased it differently if it was the case\\thanks - you too

(elements of) Society

( May sound a little lame but I think his work draws on the natural world and elements of 'Society' (with a capital, i.e. in its broadest sense).

real life (drawn from real life)

Hello,

faits de société = real life events (it's more general than faits divers, which are brief news stories)

I hope this helps.

There is nothing "current" (actuels) about these "faits de société." So, they aren't necessarily "current events."

Peer comment(s):

agree Lori Cirefice : this is the right idea
1 hr
Thank you, Lori!
agree John Peterson : I think it is something along these lines as well; broad enough to cover personal and current affairas. "Human events" might work, though it sounds a bit like a first year college course.
16 hrs
Thank you, John! This term is quite abstract in French and covers quite a bit of territory. I don't know you could translate this more literally without sacrificing precision and naturalness.
