Dutch term

Uitgeloot

Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Uitgeloot studie medicine.

Uitgeloot comes from uitloten, which translates into Select or Elimination by lottery. Select, in my opinion, implies that a student was somehow chosen........so elimination by lottery makes better sense in this case. Medical Science degree/programme, eliminated by lottery?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris Hopley Jul 23, 2009:
nuance The system in some continental European countries is such that when you graduate from secondary school, you are automatically "entitled" to go to university. This leads to over-enrolment of certain study programmes, notably medicine. Hence the need to reduce numbers by lottery. In the Anglo-Saxon system, this is not the case as entry to third-level programmes is largely competitive (i.e. school-leaving diplomas do not give automatic entitlement to university studies).
Textpertise Jul 22, 2009:
Too many applicants for too few places at medical school need to be weeded out. Assuming they are all eligible, it is sometimes considered that the only fair way to do this is by lottery. Does that make sense in your context.

:-)
agree Chris Hopley : unfortunately true - in other countries, aspiring doctors have to compete with peers to earn their place...

Bedankt Inge
neutral Patrick Ling : it is not entirely random as the participants in the draw are separated in categories based on their exam results

Once you're admitted to the selection procedure for random selection, the drawing is random. "Uitgeloot" means that you were rejected based on "random selection" (as the phrase goes) or, in other words, that you "did not draw a placement."

Peer comment(s):

agree peterstrik : I think you're on the right track here - however the document you refer to mentions that "you HAVE not drawn a place" for a fixed quota study course / an educational institution with an institution quota (my capitals).
