Italian term

per le scale malcerte

Italian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
I am not quite sure what is meant by "scale malcerte" here.

Ma più fresco l'odore
della donna incontrata, della breve avventura
per le scale malcerte.

Dagmar Lacatus Jun 26, 2009:
Just a thought I found "malcerto" as :1. Privo di certezza    and 2. Poco stabileI also read the poem that gave me the whole context. I would probably try to go with the obvious solution to this: "the treacherous staircase " or stairway. You could definitely use this term here, as it would also convey the same undelying meaning that Haaans was trying to find. Although , reading the poem, I did not think there was an underlying "doubtful story". The poet just remembers that wuick encounter....with the woman. he does not go on to speak of her.
However , this would be my choice and you could pulle it off, since this is a poem, it gives you a little bit of space to "play" with creativity.

on the rickety stairway

how about this? "the woman he met on the rickety stairway"

Just an idea...

I wouldn't fall into the trap of using anything as plainly stated as treacherous or doubtful, the fact on meeting someone on a stairway in itself already gives the idea of a fleeting moment and more still if the staircase is "rickety" and therefore impermanent.

agree James (Jim) Davis : Definitely. Only a young man can bear the weight of Pavese's melancholy. This is the way to start the morning: http://www.lyrics007.com/The Beatles Lyrics/Here Comes The S...

for the doubtful story

maybe "per le scale malcerte" si just a metaphor and means that the story is doubtful with a girl met in that way, but im not sure cause i haven't read all the poem

unstable stairs

Non so se possa andar bene, mi piace però per il suono che si ripete "st".
