Discussion

Mila Love May 28, 2009:
IronDog May 27, 2009:
What makes the issue moot is... the fact that there is no centralized authority to "standardize" these degrees in the Western countries. In the Soviet context, there was one. A к.ф.м.н. may equal a PhD in Physics, but which one -- the one from Princeton or the one from the New Mexico State University? The latter two do not equal each other to begin with since they are conferred by their respective faculties, with no authority above. Another reason not to try mapping one system on the other.
Michael Korovkin May 27, 2009:
IronDog May 27, 2009:
Then Doctor of Sciences/Candidate of Sciences... would be a perfect way of avoiding the controversy. By using them, we admit there is no one-to-one mapping and refer the reader to the Russian/Soviet cultural context. It should be clear that neither of these degrees is English. If that's not clear, one could use creative misspelling like "Kandidat" but that will likely meet objections for other reasons.
Oleksandr Kupriyanchuk May 27, 2009:
Michael Korovkin May 27, 2009:
Включая горячую полемику on this site. Не люблю давить рангом, но несколько лет участвовал в "Academic Titles and Degrees Evaluation Committee" in Canada. The matter is complex: In the UNESCO, Russia obtained evaluation of the Kandidat as Ph.D. and a full five-year university degree with a Diplomnaia Rabota – as an M.A. Doctor Nauk, in this set-up becomes transcendental and sans equivalent in Anglophone nomenclature. In reality, most universities that have evaluation committees tend to evaluate Kandidata as a two/three-year M.A./M.Sc. with a thesis, and the Brits – as an M.Phil; and Doktora – as a Ph.D. True, they never quite conside, so what's considered is the actual amount of course work, research and even the substantiality of the tesis. I personally evaluated some Kandidatskie as M.A's and some as Ph.D's. Cheers!

Not necessarily a PhD because that's nominally a degree in philosophy (in the formal structure of Western universities which retains medieval features).

Also not an MS because that roughly corresponds to the educational level of a regular graduate who did а 'дипломная работа', not a dissertation.

M.Sc & Ph.D

In English the lowest degree is usually listed first.

thanks, Dimitry. I'll be surprised, though, if a new bout of polemics isn't a-coming!

ABD (About to Become Doctor)
agree Mila Love : MA and Doctor см.ссылку http://www.qaa.ac.uk/students/guides/UnderstandQuals.asp
