planted articles
This term appears twice in parentheses in a list of articles published in Third World newspapers in the mid-1970s after the name of the publication. All the articles were planted by the KGB.
Does this mean that the articles were enciphered at one point? There's no hint of this in the context (which is just a list of articles attempting to discredit the U.S. in Bangladesh).

In absence of the context I would use this version since, as I understand, you have no idea whether the planted article was originally encrypted or the information about the published article came in an encrypted form.

Gary, based on what you said it could be anything: the text of the article that was planted might have been sent over to the target country in an encrypted format, the article, after if was published, might have been clipped and translated by an agent and sent back to Moscow in an encrypted format, or whatever. Therefore I stick with my version – it’s safe and vague enough not to mean anything in particular and at the same time it encompasses many meanings.
